Steve Smith
(President)

Steve was born into a baseball family - Don Drysdale was a cousin - and has played sports his entire life, including football and rugby as well as baseball.  He now plays softball for New Concepts I (70s) in the Los Altos Senior League.  Before retirement Steve was a banker and spent several years in the commercial real estate business.  Prior to his business career, Steve served for three years on active duty as a Marine and continued for another 20 years in the Reserves.  Steve now is a substitute teacher for APS.  His wife, Judy, is also a member of the Senior Sports Foundation Board.  They have three grown children, all of whom are active in sports.

Helen Abeyta
(Secretary)

Helen began her involvement in Senior Olympics with dance and 8-ball pool.  In 1996, Howard "Chappy" Chapman organized a basketball team in Valencia County.  After some urging from a friend, she joined the team, even though she had never participated in sports other than track in school.  Helen continues to play on Valencia County's "NM Zias" team in tournaments in Arizona, Utah, and Colorado.  She also participates in the Albuquerque senior women's basketball league. In addition to basketball, she likes to run the 100 meter, 200 meter, and the long jump at the Senior Olympics.  Helen has participated in the last five National Senior Games and also serves on the board of the Valencia County Senior Olympics.

Scott Herron
(Treasurer)

Scott
retired in 1998 from her own bookkeeping and tax preparation business.  She now focuses her energies on promoting the SSF and extolling the benefits of playing sports regardless of age.  An active athlete all her life, her participation is now slightly restricted due to knee knjuries; however, she stays involved in various sports as a manager or coordinator.  Sometimes she can even be found as a contestant in table tennis, shuffleboard, and pickleball.

Louise Kiss

Louise is a retired school counselor.  She is active in 3 on 3 basketball, badminton, racquetball, table tennis, shuffleboard, and pickleball.  Her other interests include family, friends, travel, RV-ing, and sports watching.

Judy has played senior women’s basketball with the Canyon Nets since January 2002 and joined the Senior Sports Foundation Board of Directors in January 2009.  She was born at Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles in November 1943 and has been an angel ever since - just kidding!

Before joining the Canyon Nets Judy had never played basketball but found it challenging and fun and has never looked back.  She served as co-coordinator for the team from 2006-2008 and now plays in the 65s age group.   Judy and her husband, Steve, also a member of the Senior Sports Foundation Board, moved to Albuquerque from the Los Angeles area in July 1973.  Judy works for the Arts Alliance, which serves as the arts council for the Albuquerque area.  She claims she will retire “some day soon.”
